Veteran Ghanaian journalist and cultural icon, Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, has passed away at the age of 74 after a brief battle with cancer. He died in London, the city where he spent part of his illustrious career in journalism.
Nana Gyan-Apenteng was widely respected in Ghana’s media landscape, having served in several key editorial and advisory roles. He was a former editor and columnist for The Mirror newspaper, where his insightful commentaries resonated with readers across generations. He also held the traditional chieftaincy title of Apagyahene of Tafo Eti in the Eastern Region.
His international media experience includes a stint in the UK as deputy editor of the now-defunct West Africa magazine during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Upon his return to Ghana, he led the communications unit at the Third World Network and edited its flagship publication, Africa Agenda.
Beyond journalism, Nana Gyan-Apenteng was a highly regarded media trainer and communications consultant. He lent his expertise to numerous organizations, including MTN, the United Nations, the Media Foundation for West Africa, and STAR Ghana.
An alumnus of Apam Secondary School and the University of Ghana, he was admired for his commitment to ethical journalism, cultural preservation, and mentoring the next generation of media professionals.
He is survived by six children. The family is expected to announce funeral arrangements in the coming days.
