University of Ghana’s Sociology Department launches 75th anniversary celebrations – Nsemkeka
The Department of Sociology at the University of Ghana will officially launch its 75th Anniversary Celebrations on May 29, 2025, marking a momentous chapter in its legacy as a pioneer of sociological thought and research in Ghana and across the continent.
The launch event, to be held at the department’s forecourt on the University of Ghana campus, is expected to attract an impressive gathering of faculty, alumni, students, policymakers, and civil society leaders.
Together, they will reflect on the department’s historic contributions to Ghana’s academic and policy landscape while charting a forward-looking vision for the future of sociological inquiry.
Launched under the theme “75 Years of Institutionalised Sociological Inquiry in Ghana,” the celebration will run through to December 2025 and include a packed schedule of academic and community-focused events.
These will feature public lectures, alumni engagement initiatives, student-led conferences, policy dialogues, and outreach activities designed to bridge scholarship with real-world impact.
Founded in 1950, the Department of Sociology is one of the University’s oldest and most influential academic units.
It has educated generations of thinkers, public servants, civil society leaders, and development professionals who have helped shape national debates on critical social issues—from inequality and governance to gender, education, health, migration, and the environment.
A department statement said the anniversary is not only a moment to celebrate its legacy but also an opportunity to “examine its current impact and chart a transformative vision for its future.”
Alumni across the globe are being encouraged to reconnect with the department and participate in the upcoming activities. Further details and updates will be shared on the department’s official platforms throughout the anniversary period.
