UniMAC joins UNESCO MILID Network to promote media and information literacy
The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has joined the UNESCO University Network on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) fraternity.
This initiative, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by UniMAC and the University of Lagos, Nigeria, in April 2025, marks a significant step in UniMAC’s commitment to advancing Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in Ghana and beyond.
Established in 2010, the MILID Network aims to build capacity in countries and regions to develop MIL and intercultural dialogue programmes, resources, and initiatives. This aligns with UniMAC’s mission to pursue excellence in communication and creative arts, ultimately contributing to societal transformation.
UniMAC’s signing of the MoU with MILID, makes it the first university in Ghana to join the UNESCO MILID Network, demonstrating the University’s commitment to promoting MIL.
Under the MoU, UniMAC will collaborate with the MILID Network on various activities, including: Participation in conferences organised by UNESCO; organisation of local lectures and conferences; development of MIL internship programmes; publication of newsletters on UniMAC and MILID Network activities; collaboration with libraries through seminars and workshops and participation in local, regional, and international events, including the annual Global MIL Week Conference and Youth Agenda Forum
As an affiliate member of the MILID Network, UniMAC will be mentored for one year by the University of Lagos, Nigeria, a full member of the UNESCO-MILID Network in West Africa and co-chair of the UNESCO-University Twinning and Networking Programme.
UniMAC is expected to leverage its membership of the UNESCO MILID to build excellence in Media and Information Literacy education in Ghana and beyond.
The UNESCO MILID network provides UniMAC with invaluable opportunities to collaborate with other institutions in advancing media and information literacy globally.
It would enable students and faculty to engage in cutting-edge MIL research, exchange programmes, and contribute to policy initiatives in the field of MIL. UniMAC’s membership of the UNESCO MILID Network will also empower the university to consolidate its leadership in advancing media and information literacy education in Ghana.
It is instructive to note that, UniMAC is a merger of the erstwhile Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) and the Ghana Institute of Languages by an Act of Parliament 2020 (Act 1059).
The Act envisages a holding University with constituent Institutes with the power to award degrees of the holding University. UniMAC is uniquely positioned to deliver excellence in Media, Arts and Communications education at the tertiary level.
