Striking nurses meet Health Ministry to end ongoing strike – Nsemkeka

The Ministry of Health is currently in a closed-door meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) and other key stakeholders in a bid to end the ongoing nationwide strike by nurses and midwives.

The outcome of the talks is expected to determine whether the industrial action will be suspended or continue in the coming days.

The nurses laid down their tools on June 2, 2025, in protest against the delayed implementation of the 2024 Collective Agreement, which governs salaries, allowances, and working conditions for members.

The GRNMA insists they will not return to work until their demands are met.

The Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Tony Goodman, expressed optimism about the discussions, describing the GRNMA’s presence at the table as a step in the right direction.

“This meeting is exactly what the Minister has been pushing for over the past few days—getting all sides back to the table,” he said.

“Thankfully, the association’s leaders agreed to that call and are participating in this meeting.”

Mr Goodman further stated that the Ministry is hopeful that the negotiations will yield a breakthrough.

“We’re confident that by the end of this meeting, we will reach a resolution that will lead to the strike being called off. The fact that they showed up is a positive sign—they could have refused, but they came, which shows they see merit in the Minister’s appeal.”

The strike has disrupted healthcare delivery across the country, leaving patients stranded and increasing pressure on already overstretched facilities.
