Sarah Nkansah Boateng crowned Best Midwife in the Eastern Region
In a significant recognition of leadership in maternal healthcare innovation by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Sarah Nkansah Boateng, a registered midwife and founder of TTYM Global (Talk To Your Midwife), has been named the Best Midwife in the Eastern Region for 2025.
This honour celebrates not only her clinical excellence but also her pioneering work in expanding maternal health access through community-centred and tech-enabled solutions.
With over three years of clinical experience, Sarah is widely known for her bold and compassionate approach to bridging gaps in reproductive health services for underserved women, especially market women and adolescent girls. Beginning as a radio programme, aimed at educating the public on reproductive health, Talk to Your Midwife has grown into a full-fledged social enterprise, combining on-ground services and digital tools to reach those most in need.
Through TTYM Global, she spearheads a unique care model that delivers antenatal services directly to women in market settings, eliminating common barriers such as long wait times, travel distance and missed income.
The organisation currently operates a permanent point-of-care clinic at Agartha Market in Koforidua, offering check-ups, laboratory investigations, ultrasounds, counselling services and effective referral system. The initiative has served over 70 women, many of whom had never received antenatal care before.
Sarah’s work is strengthened by a strategic partnership with the Eastern Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service, which provides technical guidance and credibility. International collaborators, including the Hanga SRH Program by the Rwanda Ministry of ICT and Innovation and Densu Associates, have also supported her work through funding, mentorship and visibility.
One of her most impactful innovations is the Obaa+ health app, a digital platform that empowers women with menstrual and pregnancy tracking, reproductive health education and access to teleconsultations. The app also uses a smart data system to flag high-risk pregnancies for early intervention and includes SMS and phone-based follow-ups for women without smartphones, ensuring inclusivity across all user groups.
In addition to her clinical and entrepreneurial work, Sarah volunteers as a columnist with the Business & Financial Times, where she writes on maternal and child health issues twice a month.
She also mentors young midwives, helping them develop leadership and innovation skills in a fast-evolving healthcare landscape. Her expertise has earned her invitations to national platforms like GTV, where she educates the public on reproductive and maternal health issues.
Sarah’s recognition as Eastern Region’s Best Midwife qualifies her to represent the region at the National Best Nurse/Midwife Awards. But for her, this is more than a personal milestone; it’s a platform to advocate for inclusive, tech-integrated and community-rooted healthcare systems.
Her work has earned her both local and international recognition, including being named one of Ghana’s 100 Most Inspiring Young Change-Makers, a Top 50 Under 30 African Changemaker by She Leads Africa, and recipient of the Innovation in Health Award by Zenith Global Health (UK).
As Ghana strives toward Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals, Sarah Nkansah Boateng is proving that midwives can be innovators, leaders and nation builders.
