Reliable Electricity Key to A 24-Hour Economy – Otumfuo Osei Tutu II – GhArticles.com
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has emphasized the need for sustained investment in Ghana’s energy sector as the country gears up for the implementation of the 24-hour economy policy.
Addressing a delegation from Dream Power Africa, a solar energy firm, at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, May 21, the Asantehene noted that uninterrupted electricity supply is central to achieving industrial and rural economic transformation.
“Currently, the government has been talking about a 24-hour economy. If that is going to be successful, then energy must also be available in rural areas, and industries will need it to function efficiently,” he said. “So, from a wider perspective, it will all help in the development of this country.”
The 24-hour economy, a flagship proposal of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), was a major campaign promise in the 2024 general elections. The initiative aims to drive round-the-clock productivity in key sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, and ICT through shift-based operations.
President John Dramani Mahama, who championed the policy, has described it as a vital component of Ghana’s industrialization agenda and a strategic response to youth unemployment. He has assured that the policy will be voluntary for businesses and supported by enabling legal and regulatory frameworks.
To spearhead the initiative, President Mahama has appointed Augustus “Goosie” Tanoh as the Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development.
