Qatar Ambassador pays courtesy call on Education Minister – Nsemkeka
The Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Ghana, Khalid Bin Jabor Al-Mesallam, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, in Accra.
The visit forms part of ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at strengthening education-focused partnerships between Ghana and its international allies.
During the courtesy call Mr. Iddrisu appealed to the Qatar Education Foundation to support the establishment of an Islamic Medical School in the Northern Region of Ghana.
He noted that the proposed institution would also function as a teaching hospital for the University for Development Studies (UDS), and form part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to expand access to medical education and improve healthcare delivery in the northern parts of the country.
He appealed, “If you could provide us with friendly concessionary financing to support this initiative, it would greatly benefit the local Muslim community in that area.”
The Minister used the opportunity to emphasise the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana and Qatar, with particular focus on collaboration in the education sector.
He expressed Ghana’s interest in deepening institutional ties between the Ministries of Education in both countries to support the mutual exchange of knowledge, best practices, and educational investment.
Mr. Iddrisu also indicated that the Ministry is currently reviewing the Islamic curriculum for basic schools, starting from kindergarten, in an effort to promote the teaching of Arabic within Ghana’s basic education system.
He further expressed Ghana’s commitment to participate in the upcoming Global Education Conference, scheduled to take place in Geneva in September 2025, where the nation will showcase its progress and strategic priorities in the education sector on the international stage.
In response, Ambassador Al-Mesallam expressed strong interest in the proposals discussed and reaffirmed Qatar’s readiness to explore collaborative opportunities in support of Ghana’s education sector.
