OSP Rejects Ofori-Atta’s Virtual Appearance Request, Insists on Physical Presence – GhArticles.com
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has dismissed a request by former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to appear for questioning via video conferencing, insisting on his physical presence as investigations into corruption allegations deepen.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, June 2, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng said the request was unacceptable and undermined the seriousness of the criminal probe.
“We want him here physically, and we insist on it,” Agyebeng stated. “A suspect in a criminal investigation does not pick and choose how the investigative body conducts its investigations.”
Mr. Ofori-Atta, who is under investigation for several financial offences, including procurement irregularities and mishandling of public funds, has reportedly been outside the country citing medical reasons. He previously submitted a doctor’s note indicating a possible surgery but failed to provide confirmation or a specific return date.
The OSP, citing continued noncompliance, has triggered an INTERPOL Red Notice to facilitate his arrest and extradition, and re-listed him as a fugitive from justice.
Investigations Cover:
- Petroleum & Minerals Revenue Assurance (GRA contracts with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd)
- Termination of ECG-BXC contract
- National Cathedral project procurement
- Ambulance procurement deal with Service Ghana Auto
- GRA Tax P-Fund mismanagement
Timeline Summary:
- Jan 2025: OSP invites Ofori-Atta for questioning.
- Feb 2025: Declared wanted after failing to provide a valid return date.
- Feb 18, 2025: Reinstated commitment to return in May; name removed from wanted list.
- Mar 2025: Ofori-Atta sues OSP for “unlawful” declaration.
- June 2, 2025: Misses deadline; OSP triggers Red Notice and renews fugitive status.
The OSP maintains that legal representation cannot substitute for a suspect’s direct engagement in criminal proceedings.
