OneGhana Movement demands justice for victims of June 3 disaster – Nsemkeka
The OneGhana Movement, a civil society organisation, has called for accountability and justice for victims of the June 3, 2015, flood and fire disaster at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Accra.
The group is demanding compensation for affected persons and legal action against GOIL, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for their alleged complicity.
They also urged the Committee investigating the incident to present an appropriate report and called on the Government to issue its white paper on the findings.
Speaking at an event marking the 10-year anniversary of the disaster, the Convener of the Movement, Senyo Hosi, expressed disappointment over the lack of accountability from the government and institutions involved.
“The Committee’s report is yet to be published and a government white paper to be issued.
“We cannot accept this lack of accountability and justice. This happened because someone refused to do their job,” he said.
The disaster, which occurred at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange GOIL fuel station, led to over 150 deaths and more than 100 injuries,
A member of the Movement and lawyer representing victims in court since 2018, Sampson Lardy Anyenini, astated that affected individuals were seeking GH¢42 million in compensation.
He expressed hope for a favourable court ruling, noting that the amount sought had diminished in value due to inflation.
“With inflation, the value isn’t the same today. Even if they are granted the amount, the government can still intervene meaningfully to provide solace,” he stated.
The Chairman of the June 3 Flood and Fire Victims Association, Thomas Sakyi, appealed for continued support from the government to alleviate their plight.
He lamented that aside from earlier compensation for medical expenses, victims had not received any additional financial assistance.
“Life has been very difficult for us. Most of us lost our means of livelihood. We have nothing to survive on.
“We plead with government and individuals to come to our aid; it has not been easy for us,” he said.
