Minister Samuel George Inspires 3,000 Girls Through ICT Training Tour Across Volta, Upper East, and Upper West Regions – GhArticles.com

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), has paid a working visit to selected Girls-in-ICT training centres in the Volta Region as part of a nationwide effort to promote digital literacy and STEM education among young girls.

The centres visited included In My Father’s House, RC Basic School in Abor (Keta Municipality), and the Amissah-Arthur Learning Centre in Ohawu (Ketu North District). Hon. George expressed delight at the energy and enthusiasm of the participants and reiterated the government’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of tech-savvy young women.

“This year alone, the Girls-in-ICT programme will train 3,000 girls and 300 teachers in digital skills,” the Minister announced. “It’s not just a calendar event, it’s a flagship programme designed to build a future-ready generation of empowered girls.”

He credited the success of the initiative in the Volta Region to strong collaboration with local leaders, including District Chief Executives and Hon. Kwame Garkpey, Member of Parliament for the Keta Constituency, who has shown exceptional commitment to advancing ICT education in his area.

Beyond just training girls, the Ministry is also equipping schools and training teachers to ensure long-term impact and equitable access to digital education for both girls and boys. The programme is being implemented through the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), under the supervision of the Ministry.

Hon. George emphasized that President Akufo-Addo is fully behind the initiative. “That’s why we are not only training you but also your teachers, and we are equipping your schools so your peers can benefit too.”

Sharing a personal story to inspire the girls, the Minister said, “My kid sister is an engineer, just like I am. Women in engineering, STEM, and ICT excel. I want to see the next Farida Bedwei, one of Africa’s most outstanding software developers emerge from this group.”

The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, thanked Hon. George and his team for their efforts and acknowledged the dedication of the facilitators working behind the scenes. He urged the girls to embrace the opportunity as a powerful step toward building a brighter future.

The Minister’s regional tour will continue in the Upper East and Upper West Regions, as part of the broader plan to expand digital inclusion and empower girls across all corners of Ghana.
