Mahama Pledges to Pay Nursing Trainee Allowances and Arrears – GhArticles.com
Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to settle all outstanding nursing trainee allowances, assuring students of timely and consistent payments moving forward.
Speaking during a thank-you tour at the College of Health in Kintampo, Mr. Mahama addressed the longstanding concerns of nursing trainees regarding delayed stipends. He confirmed that the Ministry of Health has already made budgetary provisions for the payments, which are expected to commence in January.
“On the issue of ‘allawa’—let me assure you that the minister has made adequate provision in the budget for the payment of allowances, and the allowances will be paid from January. So you will get the arrears,” he stated.
He explained that the disbursement delay was due to the government’s efforts to establish a streamlined payment structure. According to Mahama, the new system will ensure that nursing trainees receive their allowances directly through the Comptroller and Accountant General’s Department, just like public sector workers.
“But what has delayed is that the minister is putting in a system so that you will be paid through the Comptroller and Accountant General, so that every month when workers receive their salaries, trainees will also receive their allowances,” he noted.
The announcement was met with enthusiastic applause and visible relief from both students and staff, who have long voiced concerns about the financial burdens caused by the unpaid stipends.
