A joint police operation at Bui Sobinso has resulted in the arrest of 24 individuals involved in illegal mining, including 14 Chinese nationals and 10 Ghanaians.
The operation was ordered by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and carried out by a task force made up of six senior officers and 130 personnel. The raid is part of an intensified effort to curb illegal mining activities that continue to damage Ghana’s environment.
During the operation, the police seized four pump-action guns, three pickup trucks belonging to the Chinese suspects, and two excavators. Nine more excavators, which were abandoned at the site by fleeing miners, are being pursued for recovery.
The site at Bui Sobinso had been under surveillance due to ongoing environmental degradation in the area. Acting on gathered intelligence, the police launched the operation as part of a seven-day crackdown on illegal mining activities.
The team also discovered another illegal mining camp and a Chinese hideout near Subinso. However, the suspects managed to escape before the police arrived.
All arrested persons and seized items have been taken to the Bono Regional Police Headquarters and will be transferred to Accra for further investigations and possible prosecution.
The Ghana Police Service says the operation is still ongoing as part of its commitment to fighting illegal mining and protecting the country’s natural resources.
