I8 insurance companies sponsor 3-day international seminar

This week, the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) will host the 3rd edition of its annual International Educational Seminar in Accra. The event, which will last for three days – from Wednesday, May 14 to Friday, May 16 – will be held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel under the theme: “Innovating Together – Building a Resilient Insurance Future.”

The Seminar will provide capacity building for participating insurance practitioners in Ghana, as well as offering a networking platform for them.

The event is being jointly sponsored by 18 institutions that are active in Ghana’s insurance industry, comprising two reinsurance companies, eight general insurers, four life insurers, two insurance groups (holding companies for both life and general insurance subsidiaries) one micro-insurer and one dedicated insurance activity consortium.

The reinsurers are WAICA Re and Ghana Re. The general insurers are: Loyalty Insurance, SIC Insurance, Ghana Union Assurance, Enterprise Insurance, Priority Insurance, Millennium Insurance, Serene Insurance and Activa International Insurance. The life insurers are Impact Life, Quality Life, SIC Life and Enterprise Life.

The insurance Groups are the Hollard Group and the Star Assurance Group. The micro-insurer is aYo. The dedicated insurance consortium is the Ghana Oil and Gas Insurance Pool, which comprises the syndicate of general insurance companies that have banded together to insure high value oil and gas industry assets and risks in Ghana.

The event will bring together a plethora of some of the most skilled and experienced insurers and reinsurers in Ghana, along with several experts in relevant related fields such as marketing, corporate communications, economics, corporate management and information technology.

The topic for the first day will be “Transformational Leadership in Driving Innovation and Resilience” with the main speaker being Michael Kofi Andoh, the immediate past acting Commissioner of the National Insurance Commissioner. Five experts from Ghana – and Mulenga Mutati, the President of the Zambia Insurance Association – will serve as discussants and Priority Insurance’s Abubakari Salifu acting as Moderator.

The second and third days will comprise of breakout sessions. One will be on life insurance with five speakers: Nashiru Iddrisu of Hollard Life Insurance; Mrs Kakra Duffuor-Nyarko of Star Life Assurance; Maame Dufie Achampong-Kyei of Glico Life Insurance; Emmanuel Jonah of GN Reinsurance; and Alfred Ludwig Kissiedu of Red Pear Communications.

Another breakout session will address non-life insurance. The five speakers will be: Dr Kwaku Appietu-Ankrah of Ghana Reiunsurance; Farris E. Attrickie of Priority Insurance; Charles Graham-Mensah of Glico General Insurance; Mrs Freda Larbi of Enterprise Insurance; and Professor Patrick Assuming of the University of Ghana.

Yet another breakout session will address actuarial issues with the speakers being John Mensah of Gal Consulting & Advisory Services and Samuel Noonoo of the Actuarial Society of Ghana.

The other breakout sessions will address Information Technology and Accounting, while three technical presentations will also be made.
