Government to Rename UHAS After Late President John Evans Atta Mills – GhArticles.com

H.E. John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills

The Government of Ghana has announced plans to rename the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho to the Professor John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences, in honour of the late president’s enduring legacy in education and healthcare.

The announcement was made on May 28, 2025, by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during the inauguration of the university’s new Governing Council in Accra.

“This is more than a name change. It is a reaffirmation of national gratitude to a visionary who saw human development as the path to progress,” the Minister noted.

The late President Mills, who passed away in office in 2012, spearheaded the establishment of UHAS in 2011 to train skilled health professionals. Since then, the university has grown into a leading institution in public health, medicine, nursing, and allied sciences.

Chair of the Governing Council, Prof. Kodzo Gavua, called the renaming “symbolic and appropriate,” urging all stakeholders to uphold the values of discipline, service, and scholarship championed by Mills.
