Government Declares June 6 Public Holiday to Mark Eid-ul-Adha – GhArticles.com
The Ministry of Interior has officially declared Friday, June 6, 2025, a statutory public holiday across Ghana in observance of Eid-ul-Adha, one of the most important festivals on the Islamic calendar.
The announcement was made in a statement dated Thursday, May 29, and signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak. The ministry called on the general public to observe the day as a public holiday nationwide.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the profound faith of Prophet Ibrahim, who was prepared to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, in obedience to God’s command. It is a moment of spiritual reflection, sacrifice, and gratitude for Muslims across the globe.
The festival is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar, and coincides with the completion of Hajj, the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca—one of the five pillars of Islam.
Traditionally referred to as the “Greater Eid,” Eid-ul-Adha is marked by congregational prayers, the ritual slaughtering of animals, and acts of generosity and charity. Families come together to share meals and extend support to the less fortunate in their communities.
The declaration of the holiday ensures that Muslims in Ghana can observe the day with due reverence and celebration, joining millions around the world in honoring this important religious occasion.
