GACL Reclaims Airport Lands from McDan Group After Court Victory – GhArticles.com
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has reclaimed over 16 acres of prime airport lands from the McDan Group of Companies, following a favourable ruling by the Accra High Court on May 6, 2025.
The court’s judgment granted GACL full possession of two plots measuring approximately 10.63 and 5.66 acres near Kotoka International Airport, adjacent to and opposite Action Chapel International. These lands were previously leased to McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, subsidiaries of the McDan Group since 2012.
The legal action, initiated by GACL in February 2025, cited longstanding breaches of lease agreements and unpaid ground rent totaling $26,296. GACL sought recovery of the land, an injunction against interference, and legal costs.
After applying for summary judgment, the court ruled in GACL’s favour, affirming the absence of a valid defense and ordering the defendants to pay GH¢50,000 in legal costs.
This follows earlier controversies, including the suspension of McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1 in December 2024 over debt obligations though those debts were subsequently cleared.
GACL hailed the court’s decision as a significant win in protecting public assets. “The repossession of these lands not only safeguards millions of dollars’ worth of state assets but also reinforces our commitment to accountability,” a company source said.
The success is attributed to strong collaboration between GACL’s Legal Department and Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, who led the asset recovery campaign.
