Evans Scott: TGMA Best Urban/contemporary category is vision in progress

Urban gospel musician Evans Scott has described the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Best Urban/Contemporary category as a “vision in progress”.

This statement comes after the introduction of the Best Urban/Contemporary Gospel Song category in this year’s awards scheme which recognises the blending of contemporary genres like R&B, Hip-Hop, and Afrobeats with traditional gospel elements.

Evans Scott, known for his Amapiano gospel songs like Ma Pe K3 and Best Side, has been a trailblazer in the urban gospel scene. 

He, together, with other urban gospel artistes including Kobby Salm, and Obed Psych of Preachers group have been vocal about getting a category for Urban/Contemporary gospel music. 

However, Evans Scott, who was thought to be the favourite contender in the category, lost the maiden award to Joe Mettle at this year’s awards ceremony held at the Grand Arena of Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Saturday, May 10. 

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, he congratulated the winner and noted that he had valiantly fought the good fight of faith for the recognition of Urban/Contemporary Gospel music, persevering through challenges and staying committed to the vision.

He expressed confidence that in the fullness of time, Urban/Contemporary gospel musicians would not only own but also dominate the category, achieving good success.

“We fought the good fight of faith for this and we will own and dominate this category in the fullness of time.

“My gratitude and appreciation to everyone who supported and voted for me. Like I always say ‘Jesus had the 12 disciples’ but all I have are my fans who have been very supportive all these years against all odds.

“Charterhouse, organisers of Ghana Music Awards have also done a good job and they need to be appreciated for promoting Ghanaian music and artistes for 25 years,” he said. 

Evans Scott is a trailblazer in the Gospel Amapiano genre, having released a string of songs, notably Ma Pe K3, Holy Father, BestSide, Overdo and Aye.

His music has gained attention and with his music videos racking up millions of views on YouTube.
