EOCO Detains NPP’s Chairman Wontumi Over Ongoing Investigations – GhArticles.com
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been picked up by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for further interrogation following an earlier visit to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters.
Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Wontumi, who reported to the CID on Tuesday, May 27, to assist with ongoing investigations, was subsequently taken in by EOCO officials. The exact focus of the investigation remains unclear, and his legal team has yet to issue a statement.
On Monday, May 26, Wontumi was formally cautioned for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities, including operating without a license, contaminating water bodies, and trespassing in a protected forest reserve.
A press release from the CID confirmed that Wontumi had reported to their Accra headquarters on Monday, accompanied by his legal team led by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame. He fully cooperated with the investigation and submitted a formal statement before being granted bail with a directive to return the following day.
Wontumi has strongly denied all allegations, including claims linking him to an unauthorized payment from COCOBOD. Speaking to the media after Monday’s session, he insisted he had adhered to all legal protocols in his mining operations and dismissed any wrongdoing.
