May 28 is Menstrual Hygiene Day, an annual event to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management (MHM) at a global level.
It was initiated by the German-based NGO WASH United in 2013 and observed for the first time in 2014.
In developing countries including Ghana, women’s choices of menstrual hygiene materials are often limited by the costs and availability.
In line with its commitment to provide adequate sanitation facilities and access to feminine hygiene products, YAZZ hosted the ‘Empowered Periods Campaign’, providing over 6,000 young girls with menstrual hygiene kits, educational materials, and emotional support.
The campaign, which began on Wednesday, May 28, across selected regions in Ghana, has already hosted more than six schools and community sessions.
The outreach includes open discussions on menstrual myths, hands-on demonstrations, and interactive Q&A sessions led by healthcare professionals.
“It’s inspiring to see how many young girls are learning to embrace their bodies and their cycles with pride instead of fear,”says: Akosua Naana Lexis Obenewaa Opoku-Agyemang,who partnered with YAZZ for the program’s outreach events.
The campaign also features an online series called “My First Period Story,” where girls and women are encouraged to share their personal experiences, building a shared sense of empowerment and solidarity.
