Chairman Wontumi Withdraws Application to Review Bail Conditions – GhArticles.com
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has withdrawn an application seeking a review of his bail conditions.
The application, initially filed on Friday, May 30, 2025, requested the court to reconsider the bail terms, citing grounds detailed in an accompanying affidavit. The motion was scheduled to be heard on Tuesday, June 3.
However, on Monday, June 2, private legal practitioner and NPP Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako Marfo, formally withdrew the application. While the exact reasons for the withdrawal were not disclosed, Wontumi’s lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, previously confirmed that all documentation related to the two justified sureties required for the bail had been completed.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27, shortly after a visit to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra. His arrest has stirred widespread reactions, with many within the NPP criticizing the lack of transparency surrounding the case.
EOCO has yet to issue a detailed statement, but Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Srem Sai has revealed that Wontumi is being investigated for various offences including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
