Bawumia Leads NPP Efforts to Secure Bail for Detained Chairman Wontumi – GhArticles.com
Former Vice President and 2024 NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is spearheading efforts to secure the release of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, who remains in EOCO custody following his arrest on May 27.
Despite being granted bail of GHS 50 million on May 28, Wontumi has been unable to meet the stringent conditions, prompting his continued detention and stirring political controversy.
The ongoing case, centered on allegations of fraud, financial loss to the state, and money laundering, has triggered a wave of protests from the Minority in Parliament, who argue the bail terms are politically motivated.
Greater Accra NPP Regional Chairman Divine Agorhom confirmed that senior party figures, including Dr. Bawumia, are actively working to negotiate revised bail terms or explore legal avenues to facilitate Wontumi’s release.
“We are hoping EOCO will consider more lenient conditions. If not, the legal team may move to vary the terms, or the party may have to mobilise resources to meet the current requirements,” Agorhom stated.
