I am happy to be back – Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang – Nsemkeka

Vice President, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has expressed her excitement and renewed determination as she returns to resume public duties following a recent period of ill health.

Speaking for the first time since her recovery and return to Ghana on Thursday, May 22, she emphasised her eagerness to return to work and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s development.

“So I’m very happy to be back,” she said with a smile. “There’s so much that has happened, and so much more we need to do. But I believe that through our collective will, we will do much more for our country.”

She also acknowledged the overwhelming support she received from all corners — from medical professionals and government leadership to family, friends, and the public.

“I want to say thanks to God. His mercies have been infinite, as always, and I’m very grateful. I also thank the medical staff for seeing the right things and making the right proposals.”

She extended special thanks to President John Dramani Mahama, recalling how he responded swiftly in a moment of need. “To my boss, that day — I don’t even know where you appeared from — but you came and quickly set in motion what we needed to do.”

The Vice President also gave a touching tribute to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, Chief Executive of Engineers & Planners and Dzata Cement, for his unwavering personal support.

According to her, Mr Mahama “stopped at nothing to ensure I had what I needed. He came to the hospital and just sat by me — and that was healing in itself. So, my little Boss, I’m very, very grateful.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was reported to have suffered a sudden illness on Friday, March 28, 2025, and sought medical attention at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) the following day.

Following medical advice, she began a three-week medical leave on April 7, 2025, and travelled abroad for further treatment as a precautionary measure to ensure a full recovery.

The Vice President returned today after her recovery to a warm reception led by President Mahama and his wife, Lordina. Also present at the airport were Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, and other senior government officials.
