Five arrested in Ashanti Region for illegal water connections

By Elizabeth PUNSU

Five individuals have been arrested on suspicion of illegally tapping into water supply, during a Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and Kumasi Centra Police Service concerted effort to combat rampant illegal water connections in the region.

The arrests took place at several locations across the region, including Danyame, Dakodwom, Kwadaso Estate and Santasi Apire.

The arrests, carried out last week, mark a significant step in GWL’s ongoing campaign to reduce commercial losses and ensure fair access to water resources for all residents.

The five individuals were apprehended after failing to respond to surcharges issued for their alleged illegal connections, which totalled GH₵31,804.

While three of the suspects have since paid their dues, amounting to GH₵11,515, the remaining two are currently in police custody – awaiting further processing if payment conditions are not met.

This latest operation sends a clear message that GWL is taking the illegal water connection menace seriously and is committed to protecting its resources and ensuring a reliable water supply for all.

GWL officials have expressed growing concern over the prevalence of illegal connections and water siphoning in Ashanti Region, citing it as a major contributor to Non-Revenue Water (NRW) – water that is produced but cannot be accounted for, whether through leaks, theft or other means.

The company estimates that illegal activities are costing them significant revenue, hindering their ability to maintain and improve water infrastructure.

“Illegal connection and siphoning of water have become rampant in Ashanti Region, contributing significantly to Non-Revenue Water for the region.”

Acting Regional Chief Manager, Innocentia Kuupiel, speaking to journalists expressed optimism that the crackdown will serve as a deterrent to others considering engaging in illegal water connections.

She further urged residents of Ashanti Region to play an active role in combatting illegal connections by reporting any suspicious activity to the company.

According to the company, a dedicated hotline – 055 677 9028 – has been established for this purpose and callers are assured of utmost confidentiality. GWL is also offering a reward for verified reports of illegal connections.

“Ghana Water Limited is committed to meeting the demands of its customers and entreats that all and sundry should join the fight against Illegal water connections, as such acts deny the company needed resources to enhance operations.”

“Management’s dedication to fostering relationships with the police and media will help to eradicate this menace. The company has vowed to continue working closely with the police service to eradicate illegal connections throughout the Ashanti Region,” Ms. Kuupiel added.

She then lauded efforts of the Kumasi Central Police administration for their assistance in making the operation a success.
