Blackstar Experience will facilitate the establishment of well-resourced record labels – Rex Omar – Nsemkeka

One of objectives of the Blackstar Experience is to encourage investment in creative enterprises.

In an interview with Rex Owusu Marfo, the Coordinator of Blackstar Experience on Joy FM‘s Showbiz A-Z, they intend to help establish world class record labels.

“We’ve done our research and we have realised that the reason why Ghanaian artistes get to a certain level and they are stuck is because we don’t have any well resourced record label in this country be it personnel or funding. Because you cannot release the single in Ghana no matter how good the music is and you out say 200,000 cedis in the marketing and another artiste releases a song and puts 200,000 dollars in the marketing, your music might be the best but his music will blow.

So then it means that we need to set up one or two well-resourced record labels that have what it takes to market Ghanaian artistes to that global [standard],” he said.

However, he noted this will not be funded by government but by partnership with private individuals and enterprises.

“We will facilitate to bring private investment to do that. Because if you say government, everything that belongs to government belongs to everybody,” he said.

Asked their plan for record labels that are already doing well but need extra funding to do better he the team will assess their prospects of the project.

“We will assess and see who has been in the system, their trap record, how many artistes they have been able to project and based on that it will be chosen,” he said.

The Blackstar Experience is the headline programme for Ghana’s tourism, culture and creative arts industries.

In his address during the launch on May 1, 2025 of the Blackstar Experience, the Coordinator, Rex Owusu Marfo indicated that the Blackstar Experience was more than just a project, but rather a movement, a re-awakening of the national pride and an invitation to the world to experience the soul of Ghana.

He said Ghana had long been celebrated for its hospitality, history and dynamic cultural expressions: from the rhythmic beat of its music, to the captivating stories of its ancestors, from the bustling markets, to the serene landscape, indicating that these are things Ghana could offer to the world.

Rex further highlighted that the Blackstar Experience will be hinged on seven pillars: cinema, audio, cuisines, aesthetics, style, literature and heritage.
