Electricity sector showing positive signs – John Jinapor – Nsemkeka

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has indicated that the country’s electricity sector is beginning to show signs of stability and improvement.

“Already, we are putting mechanisms in place that show that in the electricity sector, we are seeing some positive results,” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, June 4, while discussing the new fuel levy.

He noted that the power supply across the country has now stabilised, stating, “Over the past few weeks, the electricity situation has stabilised largely, and if you talk to the Independent Power Producers, their payment as compared to the previous years has increased to about 70%, the loses are going down, Electricity Company of Ghana is now very decipline when it comes to expenditure.”

According to Mr Jinapor, the notable progress is a direct result of the strategic interventions undertaken by the government within a relatively short period.

The Minister’s remarks follow the new GH¢1.00 fuel levy, a decision that has drawn public criticism, especially from members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). But it is being justified by Mr. Jinapor as a necessary move to address financial deficits in the energy sector.

Mr Jinapor reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining stability in the electricity supply, adding that the levy will support the long-term health of the sector.
